Habitat loss, pesticides, and climate change have been taking a toll—-and now, plastic! 🦇 A recent study by Dr. Amanda Callaghan of the University of Reading in the UK found that mosquito larvae will eat microplastics and that the plastic bits remain in their bodies as they mature, which means that adult mosquitos can transfer the microplastics to their predators, including spiders, birds, and bats. 🦇 This is scary because bats are considered to be “keystone species” and are essential to many ecosystems. Bats help control pests with some eating as much as 70% of their body weight in insects each night. In addition, they act as pollinators, and they effectively distribute seeds where forests have been clear-cut. 🦇 We can do our part by avoiding everyday single-use plastic items. There are also choices we can make this Halloween to reduce our impact. One idea is to avoid candy wrapped in plastic by giving trick-or-treaters boxed sweets such as Junior Mints or Milk Duds. According to scholars, the etchings were created for a variety of reasons, many of which are not well understood today. This is a great first step, but it doesn’t go far enough, because too many types of food and beverage purveyors are exempt. For example, restaurants where you order at the counter and those with self-serve beverage dispensers are excluded. 🥤 My hunch is that most of the straws I find on the beach are not from dine-in restaurants. In fact, I bet that most of them originated at fast food and take-out places. 🥤 Please don’t get me wrong! I am thrilled about AB 1884. It will reduce the number of single-use plastic straws distributed daily in California, and it will help raise awareness, but will it significantly reduce the number of straws that enter the environment and end up in the ocean? 🥤 Several California cities have already passed all-encompassing ordinances or have banned plastic straws, stirrers, utensils, and polystyrene take-out containers completely.
