Over the years, I’ve found many other vintage Kids Club and Happy Meal toys that have ended up as marine debris, and this morning, I read about British sisters who are doing something about it. They have started a petition to get @burgerking and @mcdonalds to quit distributing plastic toys with their meals. Their goal is 500,000 signatures, and close to 400,000 people have already signed. Their practices for obtaining water have damaged watersheds around the world. For example, in California they have taken millions of gallons of water from the San Bernadino National Forest practically for free, and Federal Forest Service officials are still allowing it in spite of investigations and lawsuits. After searching Clororex, I learned that the company that makes it is based in Monterey, Mexico, and they were actually sued for trademark infringement by the makers of Clorox. . I was also surprised because today’s #2minbcphotochallenge9 is #unhinched, which is a reference to an Instagram influencer who pushes cleaning products. As I walked, I was thinking about what I might post in response to the prompt, and I found the answer in a tumble of driftwood. It’s like the ocean was reading my mind when it sent this bit of debris to the beach. . This all leads me to a question that I hope someone can answer: I rarely use bleach and haven’t experimented with homemade alternatives. We can all make a difference by taking tiny steps to change our habits. It’s fairly easy to refuse single-use items such as straws, stirrers, take-away cups, utensils, to-go containers, beverage bottles, and plastic bags, but the problem is bigger than that. . Take a walk through any super store and everything you see is plastic: plastic clothes (polyester and synthetic materials), plastic household items, and of course, you’ll notice that plastic packaging encases just about everything, including the food we buy. . Our steps as individuals need to be matched by those of government leaders who must have the courage to enact laws on the local, state, and national levels and who will hold manufacturers and corporations, including those in the fossil fuel industry, to account. . I am taking tiny steps toward that end by working with city council members in local municipalities to enact single-use plastics ordinances.
