Wipe that smile off of your face! #balloonsblow #litterati #2minutebeachclean #take3forthesea #marinedebris #shoresweep #happyfaceballoon #balloonsrgarbageEarth is 4.54 billion years old. Dinosaurs roamed the planet between 230 and 65 million years ago, and modern humans evolved about 200,000 years ago. Civilization as we know it is about 6,000 years old, and industrialization started in the 1800s. 🌏 In 1960, plastics made up less than one percent of waste, and it is now estimated that 8 billion pounds of plastic waste enters the ocean every year. The prediction is that by 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic than fish, by weight. 🌏 In the blink of the eye in geologic time, single-use and disposable plastics have created problems that will persist for eons. 🌏 Manufacturers and corporations must create sustainable solutions, but this Earth Day, there are simple things everyone can do to help, beginning with refusing the top five single-use plastic products: plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic take-out containers, plastic takeaway cups, and plastic straws. 🌏 Happy Earth Day every day! 🌏 #litterati #take3forthesea #2minutebeachclean #justgrabbits #shoresweep #plasticdinosaur #plasticpollution #plasticpollutes #marinedebris #refusesingleuse #earthday #earthdayeveryday #earthday2018A sleepy little octopus was resting in the tide pool. #litterati #2minutebeachclean #take3forthesea #marinedebris #plasticpollutes #plasticpollution #octopus #toyoctopusSpectacular scenery, perfect weather, and the usual debris: food wrappers, balloons, bottle caps, plastic cups—and straws! Solving the plastic pollution crisis is complicated, but Straws on Request programs could easily and effectively eliminate one of the top ten plastic items found during shoreline and neighborhood clean ups. I’m excited to be a part of a newly formed grass roots group working to encourage Straws on Request ordinances in San Diego North County cities. Please send me a message if you live in the area and would like information about how you can support our efforts. #straws #strawsonrequest #strawssuck #plasticpollutes #plasticpollution #thereisnoaway #thelastplasticstraw #marinedebris #litterati #2minutebeachclean #take3forthesea #justgrabbitsIt’s time for an alien invasion! The kids looked adorable in my crazy marine debris creations, and I was touched by the messages they wrote. It’s especially poignant that two of them (picture #2) apologized for the “trash in the water.” We adults owe them an apology for the mess we have made of their planet. The Oceanside Pier—A Place for Everyone
The first Oceanside Pier opened in 1888. It was rebuilt in 1987, and my husband and I moved here in 1988—coincidentally, the hundredth anniversary year of the opening of the original pier. I worked at the newly opened upscale Fisherman’s … Continue reading
