Triceratops degradesarus! . Plastic dinosaurs don’t decompose; they degrade limb by limb into into tiny toxic pieces that harm the ecosystem and are ingested by marine life. . When archeologists of the future uncover the these plastic fossils, what will they conclude about our culture? . #litterati #2minutebeachclean #take3forthesea #shoresweep #plasticpollution #marinedebris #plasticdinosaur #plasticfossils #planetorplasticCalifornia’s straws on request law went into effect on January 1st. It’s a step in the right direction, but it only applies to full-service restaurants. Places where you order at the counter and those with self-serve beverage dispensers are excluded. I am certain that most of the straws I find when I clean the beach come from take-out and fast-food establishments. Many California cities have already passed all-encompassing ordinances or have banned plastic straws, stirrers, utensils, and polystyrene take-out containers completely. (Swipe to see the massive bits of styrofoam that washed up after a recent storm.) It’s time for the North County San Diego cities in which I work and live to take action and enact ordinances that will make a difference. @cityofoceanside @shortstack12000 @carlsbadcagov @vistacagov @joe_green_for_vista @representvista @cori_schumacher @a1pixels @onlyloserslitter #everybeachclean #2minbcphotochallenge7 #litterati #2minutebeachclean #take3forthesea #shoresweep #polystyrene #srawssuck #stopsucking #breakfreefromplastic #marinedebris #planetorplastic #plasticpollutesJanuary Blues #januaryblues #2minbcphotochallenge7 #litterati #2minutebeachclean #take3forthesea #rubberjellyfish #balloonsblow #blueballoons #balloonsblowdontletthemgo #marinedebrisThe print on the bag clearly states, “Use, Reuse, try not to lose.” However, someone couldn’t be bothered to hold on to this one! Described as an “EVERLASTING BAG” (swipe to see the fine print) this is the epitome of sneaky or deceptive litter because the bag will not last forever, but sadly, the plastic will. . California’s plastic bag “ban” went into effect a couple of years ago, but consumers can still pay 10 cents a piece for “reusable” bags, which can be even more harmful in the environment because they are made of thicker plastic, and even though the number of single-use plastic bags found during beach cleanups has been greatly reduced, I still find them too, because the law only applies to grocery stores, convenience marts, and pharmacies. All other types of stores are exempt. . Most people do seem to remember their reusable bags when buying groceries but not when going to the mall, or when shopping at home improvement stores, office supply stores, and other places where they won’t have to pay for a bag or where single-use bags are still provided. It might be hard to remember to take reusable bags when shopping at these others places at first, but it can easily become a new habit just like it did with grocery shopping. I’ve made a pledge to use my reusable bags whenever and wherever I go shopping! I haven’t taken an inventory, but I found a rubber ducky, and I picked up straws, several spray paint cans, two motor oil bottles, balloons, beach toys, syringes, beauty products, food packaging, bottle caps, plastic cups, a brief case, and styrofoam in all shapes and sizes. I didn’t count the plastic bottles for #pickup1million yet, but I think I can see at least 4 in the pile. What Will You Do?
I have known about the problem of plastic pollution for a long time. Many years ago, my sister and her husband made me aware of the issue through their art. Judith and Richard Selby Lang collect plastic refuse from Kehoe … Continue reading
